A Bancali prison officer was taken to the emergency room following an attack that occurred today at the Sassari prison. The incident, according to the USPP union and its provincial deputy secretary, Gregory Francesco Saba, began in the walking courtyard. There, two inmates engaged in a physical altercation, for reasons still unclear, and were quickly separated by the prompt intervention of prison officers.
They took one of the two men to his assigned station to calm things down. However, the opposite happened: the man went berserk, causing a dangerous and chaotic situation for those present and behaving very aggressively toward the officers. He repeatedly punched and kicked them, eventually wounding one of them in the abdomen. The violence was so severe that it required the intervention of medical personnel and the officer's subsequent transport by ambulance to the hospital.
The episode renews the alarm about the critical context of the prison and Saba wonders why similar events occur so frequently.
"It is no longer possible," he states, "to passively watch this escalation of events. Immediate and concrete intervention is required from the competent institutions." Praise goes to the law enforcement officers for their ability to manage a complicated situation. "Every day they operate in extremely difficult environments," the deputy provincial secretary continues, "risking their own safety to ensure the safety of the institute, their colleagues, and the community."
For the Union of Penitentiary Police Unions, however, the Bancali issue remains a concern, and for this reason, they are calling on the institutions to take measures, they claim, "aimed at strengthening staffing, increasing security measures, and ensuring adequate working conditions for prison police officers."
