Monastir, the CPA turned hotspot is a powder keg: "Insufficient forces and migrants fleeing."
Everything is changing at the center: people who have just disembarked now arrive to be identified, held in "detention" for 48 hours. But with staff stretched thin, dozens are escaping every night: "It's an explosive situation."The center of Monastir (Cucca Archive)

The situation at the Monastir reception center is out of control. Migrants are disappearing within hours of arriving, before even being identified, and police unions are openly speaking of a "disaster."
Formerly a CPA (first reception center), the center has been a hotspot since Friday . And everything has changed: previously, it housed migrants who had already been identified and divided into categories (economic migrants, asylum seekers, etc.), who could leave at will. Now , people who have just disembarked arrive, who must be photographed, identified, and examined by doctors. These migrants are therefore held in "detention" for 48 hours and cannot leave.
Theoretically. Because despite the increased workload entailed by the decree, Rome isn't providing enough resources to ensure the hotspot's security. "Dozens of them are leaving, mostly by climbing over the fence, because the police force present is reduced to a patrol for hundreds of migrants," complains Massimo Vargiu of the SIULP. Flavio Tuzi of the ANIP points to "ineffective" management by the Police Headquarters, which is affecting the local area.
The decree transforming the center into a hotspot, explains Cagliari Police Chief Rosanna Lavezzaro, was issued on Friday: "We're organizing surveillance, but it's false that there's only one patrol. We've asked the ministry for more forces."
