"Today I'm not just celebrating a degree: I'm celebrating my revenge." Mariellis F. Rosario was born in Madrid, grew up between Domingo and Spain, and finally arrived in Sardinia in 2018. Today, she earned a PhD in Languages and Communication from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Cagliari. A milestone that holds many meanings for her.
Her integration journey wasn't without its obstacles: driven by the desire to feel part of a community that immediately welcomed her warmly, the University announced, "she chose to parade in the traditional Oristano dress, defying fierce criticism and incidents of racism." The criticism was unleashed on social media.
But despite language barriers, gaps from studying abroad, and the struggle to pass exams while keeping up with the times, she didn't give up. "She chose languages and communication to transform her passion for travel and discovery into a professional future."
For her thesis, she chose to explore a topic she experienced firsthand: immigration to Italy, with a specific focus on the Oristano area. Through interviews with migrant friends, she shared stories of resilience and the strength needed to build a future in a new land.
"This milestone proves that no path defines a person's worth. Believe in yourself and never give up, no matter what," says Mariellis.
