Another fire inside the Macomer CPR . It happened last night , just after 11pm, when the alarm went off . Some guests set fire to the mattresses and the fire immediately spread to the entire block . Surveillance workers and law enforcement were already operating on site before the arrival of the Fire Brigade and the 118 ambulances. The flames on the mattresses were apparently set by a group of five people, who were immediately identified.

The affected block was evacuated and the firefighters were able to work, also to assess any damage to the structure, which had been undergoing renovation work for some time. It's not the first time this has happened. The police are examining the images taken by video surveillance to ascertain the responsibilities. The reaction was immediate. «The situation is unmanageable if the legislation is not changed - writes Irene Testa, regional guarantor of people deprived of liberty - for over two months I have been writing to the UN torture prevention committee to ask for a visit to the CPR in Macomer. There were no replies. I spoke with the Prefect of Nuoro, in order to allow housing for those detained in the centre. The explosive situation is certainly not attributable to the management, but to the Cutro decree and the Lamorgese regulation".

For Irene Testa , those who have to remain in prison conditions for 18 months without being able to carry out any type of activity within the center and without having committed any crime are overcome by desperation and discouragement. «Situations which then lead to desperate gestures - writes Irene Testa again - Unfortunately, any possible further pressure required to repress the most risky behaviors, in this context, will be able to do little towards the critical issues if the problem is not addressed at the root».
