After hours of closure and inconvenience, the southbound carriageway of State Road 131, in the direction of Cagliari, in the section between Macomer and Bonorva, has finally been reopened to traffic.
Traffic, which had returned to normal in both directions, had been interrupted yesterday morning due to the serious accident that caused the death of Filippo Ionta, 48, a Roman truck driver.
The closure of the main road on the island brought traffic to a standstill all day. Long queues, mandatory diversions and alternative routes on secondary roads created enormous inconvenience, especially under the scorching sun.
The “Trenino Verde” was also in chaos, blocked after a truck, in an attempt to bypass the state road, hit a railway bridge along the provincial road between Semestene and Pozzomaggiore. The vehicle got stuck, damaging the structure and paralyzing the line.
The accident that cost Ionta his life has shocked the world of road transport. Filt-Cgil has expressed its condolences and anger for yet another tragedy at work.
"The transport and logistics sector of Filt Cgil, composed of drivers, couriers and those who are involved in loading and unloading goods every day, is deeply shocked by this latest death that occurs while a colleague is at work. There is a very strong indignation that is indescribable," wrote secretary Arnaldo Boeddu in a note.
With the reopening of the southbound carriageway, traffic is now back to normal. But the bitterness of a dramatic day remains, as does the increasingly urgent request for structural interventions on the Sardinian road network.
