Paola Piga, 66 years old from Cagliari and resident in Quartucciu for some years, died on Wednesday at the Monserrato Polyclinic. A friend, 77 years old from Quartu, is hospitalized in serious conditions in the Pneumology department of the Santissima Trinità in Cagliari. Both, suffering from pneumonia, tested positive for legionella bacteria.

The only established connection for now between the two women is their presence at the meeting of the Neocatechumenal community from 2 to 5 November at the Rodia hotel in Oristano. A spiritual retreat, made up of meetings and experiences of coexistence, without leaving the structure. For this reason, the Oristano Local Health Authority will carry out all the investigations to assess whether the two women actually inhaled infected water particles in the hotel or whether it is a coincidence and the cause must therefore be sought elsewhere.

As has emerged so far, Paola Piga participated in the Neocatechumenal spiritual retreat at the beginning of November at the Rodia hotel in Oristano: in total there were around thirty people from the Poetto community. Once she returned home, after a few days, she felt ill. Respiratory problems until hospital admission. The positive result for legionella arrived on Wednesday. The day after death. Family members and the Neocatechumenal community checked whether other people had similar symptoms. And we arrived at the friend from Quarto, hospitalized at the Santissima Trinità for serious pneumonia. The test made it possible to ascertain that she was also positive for legionella.
