The photo is from 4:36 pm this afternoon, Saturday 10 August; more than 24 hours have passed since yesterday, Friday, when around 11 am the copious leak of diesel occurred, from a tanker truck just disembarking from the ferry.
The liquid quickly invaded the ferry embarkation-disembarkation dock (these were diverted to another dock), the adjacent concession parking lot (closed) and Via Amendola, the main artery of city traffic, which was also closed. The slopes would have fortunately avoided significant spills into the sea, where anti-pollution banners were set up.
In the concession parking lot, reclamation work is still ongoing this afternoon and it is closed, like most of the platform. Via Amendola was reopened to traffic (last night) but some of the parking lots are still closed.
"There is no environmental damage of biblical proportions," writes the mayor, Fabio Lai, however. "Let's not exaggerate what happened and let's not underestimate the power of social media in multiplying messages of all kinds, so maximum responsibility in posts and comments for the good and image of our island. There was a problem, it's true and even serious, but it was limited and contained thanks to the tireless work of uniformed personnel from every corps and the civil protection who were able to significantly limit the level of pollution at sea near the port area. Certainly - continues the mayor - there were major disruptions in the land part which led to the closure of the main road and some commercial activities. Some, even today, could suffer damage due to fumes. At this time, they must go with maximum unconditional solidarity."
