Due to strong winds, the commemorative ceremony for the 75th anniversary of the “Procellaria” complex, made of granite and bronze, inaugurated on the island of Santo Stefano on 9 September 1949 in memory of the fallen of the battleship Roma, took place yesterday in Piazzale Avegno of the Petty Officers' School instead of, as planned, on board the ship Thaon de Revel.
For the occasion, the Vice President of the Region, Giuseppe Meloni, the Prefect of Sassari, Grazia La Fauci, the Mayor of Porto Torres, Massimo Mulas, the former Minister of Defense, Arturo Parisi, and other civil and military authorities came to La Maddalena. The Mayor of La Maddalena, Fabio Lai, the Commander of Marina Ovest, Enrico Pacioni and Mario Me, President of the Carlo Avegno Committee, spoke. Blessed by the military parish priest, Don Bastianino Pirino, a laurel wreath was then transported and thrown into the sea, in front of the monument of Santo Stefano, by a Coast Guard patrol boat. The monument is made up of a monolithic granite column, 9 meters high, weighing 37 tons. Two bronze beaks are wedged into the top and at the foot of the column is an allegorical statue, also in bronze, reminiscent of D'Annunzio's "victory". The work is by the sculptor Carlo Fontana.
