When the agents of the Commissariat Steering Wheel arrived at the house , they found the doctor - on duty at the Iglesias Mental Hygiene Center - lying on the ground: his face was bloodied and the 58-year-old was on top of him, continuing to hit him.

The policemen, with great effort, managed to block him so as to allow the 118 operators to rescue the doctor, who was then urgently transferred to the Brotzu hospital in Cagliari where he was given a 30-day prognosis for serious injuries.

From what has been reconstructed, the attacker, a psychiatric patient, had contacted the mental health center to have a further dose of the pharmacological therapy at home , taken the day before, as it was deemed insufficient.

The doctor had shown up at his house together with two nurses and once inside he was suddenly kicked and punched by the man in the grip of a "violent outburst of anger". The two women were unable to do anything to remove the doctor from the fury of the blows because they too were repeatedly kicked. Only one of the two managed to reach the courtyard and call 113.

The 58-year-old was arrested for serious injuries and a very direct hearing is scheduled for today.
