A situation of degradation that has been going on for years and which, according to residents, has now become unsustainable.
This is the situation reported by residents of the Ormus galleries, between Via Dante and Via Santa Alenixedda, in the center of Cagliari, where the problem of homeless squatting is intertwined with incidents of drug dealing, drug use, and security-related tensions.
"The tunnels," the residents explain, "have long been transformed into a permanent bivouac." Waste, urinating, and dogs left unattended create an unhealthy and dangerous environment, especially for children. "We can no longer move around freely," some residents say. "Our children are not safe."
The situation reached a critical point recently, when a minor fainted after purchasing and consuming drugs in the tunnels. He was rescued by 118 and taken to hospital.
An episode that deeply shook the neighborhood and which, according to residents, "demonstrates the urgency of immediate intervention."
Despite the change of municipal administrations over the years, the issue has not yet found a solution .
"We've always been told that the homeless are refusing to accept the housing made available. They tell us it's up to us to manage the situation," the residents emphasize, "but this is a public order issue that must be addressed by the competent authorities."
Local residents are therefore calling for institutional intervention to restore safety and livability to an area that, they emphasize, "cannot continue to be left to decay and abandonment, with serious consequences for the health and safety of those who live there."
