On the occasion of the entry into force, today, of the modification of article 119 of the Constitution, in which the recognition of the principle of insularity was inserted, Michele Cossa – president of the promoting committee – wrote to Giorgia Meloni.

Cossa asks the president of the Council of Ministers for "actions aimed at promoting the development of island economies, such as forms of taxation that favor the attraction of new investments, actions for the right to mobility and interventions to bridge the infrastructure and energy gap".

«It would be very significant if a signal in this sense were to arrive already in the next budget law, the process of which has just begun - writes Cossa - It is a principle of fundamental importance for the citizens of the Italian islands, who by subscribing en masse to the first popular initiative constitutional law proposal ever to be approved are the real protagonists of this historic day. Sardinians, Sicilians, citizens of the smaller Italian islands can look to their future with greater confidence, convinced that the Republic will honor the commitment solemnly undertaken by carving this principle into its own fundamental law".

The letter also stresses that it is "a commitment that involves all institutional levels and all branches of the State, and which must be pushed up to the top of the European institutions", but which (referring to Meloni), "because of her high office, makes her the main protagonist of the new phase that is about to open».

Another aspect highlighted is contained in a further passage: «What the citizens of the Islands are asking for are not new forms of vulgar welfarism. On the contrary, we are convinced that welfarism, with patronage and the underworld that it always brings with it, has produced pernicious effects over time, "desertifying" large areas of the territory from an economic and social point of view. But claiming the right to be competitive and to have the same opportunities as all other Italian citizens is quite another thing".
