Dismay in Uta prison for the death of an inmate, which occurred in his sleep.
The 53-year-old man was serving a long sentence and had been sent to hospital several times for diagnostic tests but had often refused hospitalization . The death occurred during the night, probably from cardiac arrest, and the news was released this morning.
What happened, comments Marco Porcu, director of the correctional facility, "is always a cause of great displeasure even when it happens without any possibility of a resolving intervention".
The tragedy, adds Maria Grazia Caligaris, of the "Socialismo Rights Reforms" association, "brings attention back to a problem of prison health efficiency especially in this period when the entire health system in Sardinia shows all its limits. The most problematic aspects concern prisoners with psychic problems and drug addictions whose permanence behind bars is very difficult to manage, if not downright impossible when it comes to conditions of real incompatibility with the loss of freedom. Beyond the individual case, even with questionable personal choices, obviously the tools to guarantee treatment must be strengthened. For this reason, SDR appeals to the regional health councilor Doria for greater attention and undertakes to promote a meeting on the subject to examine the aspects of health in all Sardinian institutes".
