Immigrants also leave the island: two thousand fewer in 3 years

Immigrants also leave Sardinia. A land of first port of call for many and of new opportunities, it has often turned into a fleeting stop, a springboard for new goals. This was revealed by the data contained in the Region's 2024 annual immigration plan , approved on February 23, which kicks off a series of projects by allocating a budget of 300 thousand euros.

From the data contained in the report attached to the resolution, it is discovered that, if in 2020 there were 52,329 regular resident foreigners, three years later, in 2023, there were approximately 2 thousand fewer : 50,211. The bleeding in the three-year period in question was constant, only to then stop to make room for a timid recovery. According to the tables, in 2021 the number dropped to 49,322, in 2022 it decreased further, reaching 48,400.

But if the "accordion" demographic trend of foreigners now marks an increase (+0.2%), the same cannot be said of that of Sardinians, who suffered a decrease last year. Translated: the number of immigrants is growing - but only in the last year - while that of natives is not.

Immigration has also made headlines for its economic contribution to businesses . After the pandemic, with the post-Covid recovery, the country - including the island - witnessed a growth in GDP , with a consequent increase in employment rates . Also in this case the most interesting data concerns immigrants , who recorded the highest employment rates (+5.2% compared to 2021) when compared to natives (+2.1%). In the 2023 annual report of the Leone Moressa Foundation - as reported in the Region's annual plan - "the economic contribution that immigrants give to Italy was quantified at 154 billion euros, equal to 9% of national wealth". The aforementioned report, referring to 2022, reveals other data regarding Sardinia where resident immigrant entrepreneurs were 11,581 out of the total of 761,255 equal to 1.5%. In the same year, foreign companies present in Sardinia were 9,503 with an incidence of 6.6% on the total (575,673).
