Regional prison administrator Domenico Arena has opened a new chapter in the cat situation at the Bancali prison in Sassari. In a service order last month, the facility's director had ordered the felines to no longer be fed, given the precarious hygiene conditions that had arisen.

Arena recently announced in a document a meeting between the director herself, the municipal guarantor for prisoners, the deputy mayor of Sassari and the director responsible for the ASL 1. The latter expressed full availability for the sterilization of the cats while Pierluigi Salis, representing the Municipality, reported that he will take charge of involving local associations for the subsequent placement of the felines .

Following veterinary medical guidelines, fenced-in areas were created within the prison to hold the animals after sterilization . Finally, the regional superintendent clarified the meaning of the director's orders, which had sparked union protests and a sit-in in front of Bancali. "The service notice in question," he concluded in a statement, "was aimed solely at protecting their health, preventing the provision of unsuitable food, and at the same time, ensuring a healthy workplace."
