This is the big news from the Phantom investigation , which yesterday led to the arrest of eight Algerians on the island .

Cagliari Flying Squad leader Davide Carboni explained to Radiolina: "The base was based in Cagliari and had important ties to Algeria. For the first time, activities were organized on the island , with a prominent member of the organization having settled in the hinterland."

The investigation, which began in February, was swift and led to the arrests yesterday: "We acted quickly, primarily to safeguard the migrants' safety," explains the Flying Squad leader. "Already in June and September 2025, we arrested five smugglers responsible for the deaths of five migrants in two crossings."

The organization, Carboni added, was ready for a quantum leap: "The goal was to switch from the usual fiberglass boats to fast dinghies they called Phantoms, in order to transport more migrants and drugs, especially hashish and cocaine, thus increasing business. With yesterday's measures, we have put a stop to this ."
