The missionary of the Italian Red Cross alongside the migrant people or victims of the earthquake and floods. Around Italy, to help those in need, with humanity and passion. With a smile.

Giannina Piga , 64 years old, state employee, wearing the Red Cross uniform and as a volunteer, was in Lampedusa for ten days, to welcome migrants, but for 25 years she has been working in the territories hit by the earthquake and floods, to bring comfort, to bring a smile and a lot of humanity. She was in Lampedusa from September 23rd to October 4th, welcoming migrants who had just landed after a terrible journey .

«We distributed water and food, clothing, shelter. Logistical and humanitarian support. But above all a smile and a lot of humanity. In turn they looked at us with eyes full of hope, because for them we are hope."

Giannina Piga started alongside the earthquake victims of Abruzzo, in Sicily, in Umbria and then among the flood victims of Emilia Romagna and Sardinia . Always ready to leave, leaving family, friends and facing difficult situations with an emotional impact.

«I would like to tell everyone that carrying out this activity is rewarding. I say this in particular to young people, who probably know little about migrants and their conditions. In Lampedusa I saw a lot of suffering, but I saw hope in the eyes of those people. It would be appropriate for us too to have more sensitivity, more attention to volunteering and to helping those people who live in suffering. I launch an appeal for sensitivity to start from families, schools and institutions. Helping people, on the other hand, is rewarding. Let's create a tool to help people. In all circumstances."
