Teaching students first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers is the objective that today in Elmas, at the “Duca degli Abruzzi” Institute, was at the center of the conference in which it was presented, in the presence of Marina Calderone – Minister of Labor – the “First aid school” project managed by Inail in which the Italian Resuscitation Council (IRC), a scientific society accredited by the Ministry of Health, which brings together doctors, nurses and operators expert in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the Regional School Office for Sardinia collaborate , and the Regional Emergency Urgency Company of Sardinia (AREUS).

« Every year in Europe - underlined IRC - approximately 400,000 cardiac arrests are recorded (60,000 in Italy) and it is estimated that only in 58% of cases those assisting intervene with life-saving maneuvers (cardiac massage, ventilations) and in approximately 20% of cases also with the defibrillator. Survival is approximately 8%. The chance of surviving cardiac arrest decreases by 10% for every minute that passes and for this reason it is essential that anyone who witnesses a cardiac arrest immediately carries out life-saving measures such as cardiac massage. In this context, training, from a young age, plays a fundamental role."

« Safety in the workplace is an important part, but only a part, of a safe life, for which training must be done right from school - declared Minister Calderone during the conference - Young people are its first ambassadors and we must start from them to achieve a cultural change, consolidate the awareness that safety is life. An automatism of behavior is needed, an imprinting of a safe life, because having respect for one's own life also means having respect for that of others. Therefore, projects such as the one in collaboration with Nail for training in accident prevention in schools are welcome."

The training project presented this morning in the great hall of the "Duca degli Abruzzi" interests and involves students in the last classes of high schools and aims to spread knowledge among young people of the risks to health and safety in every living and working environment , as well as promoting awareness of the appropriate behaviors to adopt in the management of emergencies, including cardiorespiratory ones.

For Fabrizio D'Ascenzo, president of Inail, «training, understood as a fundamental educational path, must be increasingly valued. Adequate training helps to stimulate a different approach to the issues of health and safety at work, providing an essential contribution to the consolidation of the culture of prevention which we believe is unavoidable and which must be spread pervasively, starting from the world of school so that safety become an essential element of the growth of young people. We must therefore work synergistically to achieve this objective and act in a network logic with the awareness that the improvement of prevention actions comes through effective sharing of experiences and knowledge. I want to thank Minister Calderone for his participation, demonstrating his constant attention to the topic."

«Inail wanted this project because it has always paid particular attention to the world of school, involving the student world in initiatives aimed at raising young people's awareness of the importance of observing safe and correct behavior in every living environment, in the awareness that school is the primary place in which to talk about prevention , where health and safety training can find fertile ground, take root and become the individual's heritage – said Alfredo Nicifero, regional director of Inail Sardinia -. For this reason - he continued - it is essential that the development of a safety culture starts from school. What is now being taught to the younger generations is something that will creep into their conscience, becoming part of their cultural baggage , conditioning their future behavior in every area of life, whether family, work or social."

« This project can become a national point of reference - the words of Andrea Scapigliati, president of the Italian Resuscitation Council - because it aims to put into practice what the Italian law on first aid, among the most advanced in Europe, already provides in the field of school autonomy, or the teaching of cardiopulmonary resuscitation at school . Thanks to the foresight of the regional institutions involved, students will learn what to do in the event of cardiac arrest, interacting as best as possible with the local emergency system, and this aspect will allow more lives to be saved in the near future."

«In the direction of building a culture of safety and solidarity at school, there are two legislative proposals of considerable interest, currently under the attention of Parliament - underlined Nicifero - which concern precisely the introduction of the teaching of a culture of safety in secondary schools and the introduction of teaching, in upper secondary schools, labor law and safety in the workplace. If these proposals were accepted and included in the current school regulatory system - concluded the regional director of Sardinia - an important step forward would certainly be made in the diffusion of the culture of safety and, therefore, in the prevention of accidents at work and professional diseases" .

«The project is extended to the entire regional territory and involves the involvement of schools that express their interest in the initiative – explained Francesco Feliziani, director of the regional school office -. For the first two years of implementation of the training initiative, 53 higher education institutions and an audience of over 12,000 students and 700 teachers have already signed up."

Among the interventions of the day, the Inail Central Prevention Director, Ester Rotoli, explored the theme of planning, collaborations and perspectives relating to the diffusion of the culture of prevention in schools while the theme of the accident phenomenon in schools, with a comparison between the national and regional data, was treated by the General Coordinator of the Inail statistical actuarial consultancy, Silvia D'Amario.

Alessio Tola, professor of analysis and evaluation of technologies at the University of Sassari, focused on the management of safety in schools and technological innovation in a preventative way, which was followed by the students' field simulation on emergency management, resuscitation cardiopulmonary and the use of defibrillators.

The conference was attended by, among others, the councilor for labour, professional training, cooperation and social security, Desirè Manca, the head teacher of the “Duca degli Abruzzi” school institute, Maria Antonietta Atzori, the mayor of Elmas, Maria Laura Orrù, the director of AREUS, Simonetta Cinzia Bettelini.

In closing, the project partners discussed each other in the round table "From the culture of safety to the culture of solidarity" moderated by the central health superintendent, Patrizio Rossi.
