Fires between Vallermosa, Siliqua and Villacidro: a 26-year-old has been accused of eight fires

A serial arsonist, held responsible for at least eight fires in 2021, was identified after investigations by the specialized investigative units (Nipaf) of the Forestry Corps of Cagliari and Iglesias. It is MA, a 26-year-old from Vallermosa born in Iglesias, with a clean record.

In July and August last year, a series of fires (in total there were 31) developed from the bumps of the road between Vallermosa , Siliqua and Villacidro . The characteristics of the episodes immediately gave rise to the doubt that they were serial-type crimes : the repetitiveness of the fires, triggered in the vegetation of the ditches of high-traffic roads in order to propagate quickly, and the devices used for triggering that do not they left no trace.

The Forestry Corps then monitored the area and concentrated on an off-road vehicle that traveled the stretch under examination several times and in times compatible with the triggers. Thanks to the images available, it was seen that an object was thrown from the car from which flames would then spring.

Thanks to the timely intervention of the firefighting teams of the Forestas agency and of the volunteers, coordinated by the Forestry Corps, the total area concerned was limited to only 4 hectares and it was possible to identify the bomb used by the arsonist. Taking into account the time and days chosen to take action, in some cases these were days classified as "extreme fire danger" by the Civil Protection, so here is the desire to cause as much damage as possible.

The precautionary measure of house arrest was requested for the 26-year-old. The order was signed by judge Lucia Perra at the request of the prosecutor Rossella Spano. The penalty is up to 7 years of imprisonment, but if the aggravating circumstance of the forest fire is recognized, the maximum penalty is 10 years.

Responsibilities are attributed to the young man in particular in relation to three fires which affected approximately 3.17 hectares of uncultivated land; approximately 1,400 square meters of uncultivated land; approximately 1,088 hectares of uncultivated land and an area of approximately 6,600 square meters of eucalyptus reforestation.
