After three years of construction—and constant setbacks due to changing regulations and ongoing challenges—the Quartu municipal theater is beginning to reach its final destination. This time, the City Council has once again given the green light to the final work before the inauguration: the City Council has approved the design guidelines that will clear the way for completion of the building on Viale Marconi, known to the residents of Quartu for decades as the Il Nuovo cinema.

An €813,000 project, financed by the 2021-2027 Development and Cohesion Fund thanks to an agreement with the Metropolitan City of Cagliari. The funds will be used to transform the building into a multipurpose, safe, and accessible cultural hub, open not only to theater but also to conferences, performances, and events. The municipal administration aims to complete the revitalization of the city center. After the former Capuchin Convent, the former Barracks, and the Michelangelo Pira Space, the theater on Viale Marconi would become the missing piece in giving Quartu metropolitan cultural prominence, and beyond.

Specifically, the interior finishes of the stalls, gallery, and service areas will be completed, the electrical and lighting systems will be overhauled, the currently non-functioning air conditioning will be restored, the auditorium's acoustics will be improved with corrections and insulation, the stage equipment will be completed, and the sound system will be installed.

Before starting the new work, an inspection of the existing installations will be carried out to recover what can be salvaged. The budget also includes an elevator to ensure full accessibility. And then there's the safety issue: as a public entertainment venue, fire safety certification and a review by the Supervisory Commission will be required.

Another year of work and testing, with the goal of completion by 2027. "The construction site has encountered several critical issues since the last council meeting, with the succession of new seismic and fire regulations for public entertainment venues," explains Public Works Councilor Antonio Conti. "Now we're reaching the finish line. The final finishing touches remain, highly specialized final works for which we have acquired specific consultancy that will allow us to meet the deadline."
