After participating in Cop27 in Sharm El-Sheikh and Cop28 in Dubai, the Interreg Next Med Programme – of which the Sardinia Region is the Managing Authority – is taking part in the United Nations Climate Change Conference Cop29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, which began on Monday and will continue until 22 November. Interreg Next Med has a packed programme of events planned at Cop29, with events organised in various venues , including the Mediterranean pavilion, the Spanish pavilion, the Francophonie pavilion and those dedicated to Climate Mobility and Food. Furthermore, Interreg Next Med will participate in an official event promoted by the Presidency of the UNFCCC on 'Just Transition'.
The participation of Interreg Next Med at COP29 aims to raise awareness among the global community on climate change in the Mediterranean and to explore concrete solutions, addressing key issues such as the circular economy, sustainable management of natural resources, food security, the development of green skills and the role of young people in climate action . COP29 will also provide the opportunity to present the new Interreg Next Med call that will be launched soon. With a budget of €83.6 million, this ambitious initiative aims to finance green transition projects aimed at strengthening the capacity to adapt to the impacts of global warming and promoting climate resilience in the Mediterranean area.
"The recent dramatic events in Southern Sardinia and the Valencia region, which have caused serious economic damage and human losses", commented the President of the Region, Alessandra Todde , "underline the vulnerability of our territories to increasingly extreme weather conditions. The climate emergency must be addressed with strong collective action to accelerate investments in zero and low environmental impact solutions, with the aim of drastically reducing emissions produced by human activities. Interreg Next Med, uniting the efforts of actors from 15 different countries, can become a reference model for environmental sustainability and climate resilience in the Mediterranean".
