From via Ticca it crossed viale Monastir to enter via dell'Agricoltura. When the 51-year-old driving a red van completed the manoeuvre, crossing the double continuous line, Roberto Orlando, 28, arrived on his motorbike : the carabiniere, free from duty, was unable to avoid the vehicle, beating in the rear side. And the impact was tremendous and unfortunately fatal.

This is the reconstruction, according to the first investigations carried out by the agents of the local police, on the tragic accident which took place yesterday evening in Cagliari, in one of the entrance roads to the city. Orlando's friend, who was following him about ten meters away, also on a motorbike, managed to avoid the van, giving first aid to the carabiniere and immediately calling 118.

The driver of the van, a 51-year-old trader, continued to cry after the accident. He faces charges for vehicular homicide . His elderly mother was with him: in shock she was rescued by the 118 staff.

On the spot, in addition to the municipal patrols, also the victim's colleagues, the carabinieri of the company's mobile radio unit and of the Sant'Avendrace station to collaborate in the surveys and in the control of the viability.

Orlando, originally from Torrenova (Messina), worked in the Sardinia Battalion and lived in Dolianova. He was a big motorcycle enthusiast.

Many messages of condolence and pain . Like that of the Sic, an independent union of the Carabinieri: «We cling to the pain of the family members and the carabinieri of the 9th Battalion Sardinia for the tragic death of Roberto Orlando. We had the good fortune to meet Roberto and to appreciate his uncommon human and military qualities. You will always be present in the memories of your brothers in arms».

He was also part of the Balentes Bikers group of motorcyclists who greet him: «Rest in peace brother».
