Alghero and Sassari say goodbye to Giovanni Frulio , affectionately known to all as Giovannino , who died on Monday evening at the age of 89, a pillar of the regional Cisl and a lifelong sportsman.

The funeral will take place tomorrow in the Cathedral of San Nicola in Sassari.

The memory in the words of brother Tore Frulio :

« In a few days he would have turned 90 , but the game was evidently already over, and as a good sportsman perhaps, who knows, he dreamed of saving himself in the corner, right in the “Cesarini zone”. He had grown up as a footballer in the ranks of Nettuno Football and then Alghero, after a childhood spent running on the ramparts of the old city ... together with Lucio Marinaro, Sandro Goffi, Vanni Sanna and many young champions of a city that dreamed, and advanced in every sector. They were the difficult post-war times, but nevertheless boxing, basketball, swimming and water polo, cycling and above all youth football helped with the groups of the Cathedral parish (the only one in Alghero at the time) to lift up the population, emerging from the rubble of the bombing. With great enthusiasm, together with Raimondo Usai, Giovannino and Felicino Marinaro and many other enthusiasts, the “Polisportiva Alghero” was founded in Piazza Civica in the Town Hall, of which Giovannino became a prompt animator and then manager and secretary, for many years. A wave of young people wore the “yellow and red jersey”, until the much-fought promotion to the national D series. With Giovanni Frulio, secretary, freshly graduated in Law with the Masters of the School of Francesco Cossiga, thanks to the managers of Juventus and Milan, young prodigious footballers arrived in the team from the Continent in military service in the Barracks of Sassari, and then, with Benecchi and Nardin goalkeepers, Marconato, Rotoni, Moretto, Bertanza, Gasparetti, Salvatici ... and many others, it was really easy to win and become a great Club: like Torres, like Cagliari who, having just won the first Scudetto, arrived with "Riva imperatore" in Alghero in a memorable match, still in the old Campo Mariotti, packed with people. Then, for him, a second beautiful professional life full of satisfactions, in Sassari in the Banco di Sardegna, and Cagliari and Rome as regional secretary of the Bankers of the CISL and finally as regional secretary of the Federation of Pensioners: which he loved with the passion of someone who believed in honesty, and in social commitment to the promotion and protection of the always difficult world of work in Sardinia. Yesterday evening he left in silence, almost on tiptoe, fighting however with vigor and positivity, until the end, for the supremacy of life that he has always defended and loved in the best forms of public commitment".
