An estimated total impact of 6 billion in the nine years envisaged for the construction, the cost of which is approximately 1.7 billion with more than 36,000 workers employed.

These are the economic and employment repercussions of the Einstein Telescope, illustrated yesterday by the Minister of Labor and Social Policies Marina Elvira Calderone in Rome, during the official presentation of the Italian candidacy to host the most powerful instrument in the disused mine of Sos Enattos, in Lula never built to capture gravitational waves.

ET could become what Cern is for particle physics, with at least 1,400 people active within it, coming from 23 countries and 221 research institutes. A study by the University of Sassari also estimates that every euro spent on ET will generate 3.2 and an increase in GDP of 1.6 euro.

THE SCIENTIFIC IMPACTS

So far the economic repercussions. Then there are the scientific ones, illustrated by the Nobel laureate Giorgio Parisi , testimonial of the Sardinian candidacy: «ET – he explained – allows you to go far back in time and, being able to explore the era close to the Big Bang, it is possible that there are many difficult surprises to predict". It will be a journey to discover the secrets of the universe, observed the president of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, Antonio Zoccoli, and it is an unprecedented undertaking also for the president of the National Institute of Astrophysics, Marco Tavani.

GIORGIA MELONI

Giorgia Meloni also spoke during the official presentation of the candidacy: «I wanted to offer with my presence the attention, the will, the dedication that the Italian government intends to put on Italy's candidacy to host the Einstein Telescope, I wanted this will was clear,” said the premier. «Hosting this unprecedented tool in Italy is for science a huge leap forward in our ability to understand the cosmos; for politics it is a way to bring Italian and European research back into the limelight. We will give it our all: it is a signal to Italy and to the role that Italy can play in the world».

THE CHALLENGE WITH LIMBURG

The decision on the site will be made in 2025 and Italy faces "fierce competition," said Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. That of Limburg, site of the Netherlands on the border with Belgium and Germany. The Sardinian site has silence on its side, a fundamental characteristic because research on gravitational waves requires instruments that cannot be disturbed.

Sardinia is among the 30 least seismic areas in the world, in Limburg the seismicity is typical of central Europe, much higher. Furthermore, the Dutch site is much more man-made, with nearby railways and motorways.
