For the first time, the celebration of the Penitentiary Police (206th anniversary of the foundation) was organized in Tempio. The ceremony was held in the "Paolo Pittalis" prison, which was attended by the regional leaders of the Corps, representatives of the forces of order and the judiciary.

There was the regional administrator, Maurizio Veneziano , who took stock of the difficult situation of Sardinian penitentiaries. Veneziano confirmed that he had filed the final report on the escape of Marco Raduano , the boss of the Gargano mafia who was released from the Badu 'e Carros prison at the end of February, climbing down from a wall with knotted sheets.

" I can only say - declared Veneziano - that I have concluded my administrative report on the facts ". According to rumors, internal responsibilities would emerge from the information, also addressed to the DDA of Cagliari.

For the rest, Veneziano reaffirmed the spirit of sacrifice and the efficiency of the staff of the Penitentiary Police, which operates in extremely difficult conditions in Sardinia. There is talk of a 30 per cent gap in the agents' workforce and 70 per cent of intermediate figures (inspectors and superintendents) .

Four directors look after ten institutes. " An episode - Veneziano said - cannot erase the work and results of the Penitentiary Police and the daily sacrifice of the personnel ". In the Tempio prison, for example, the commander Mariaelena Mariotti should have 40 inspectors and superintendents on her staff, while there are only two units in service.

Luigi Arras, secretary of the Sinappe trade union, said: "We cannot speak of a lack of personnel, in Sardinia we have a problem along the entire chain of command, sometimes non-existent".
