Elmas and Castelsardo are also among the 68 Italian municipalities that have obtained the prestigious award of " Plastic Free Municipality 2023 " for the commitment and sensitivity shown in respect for the environment and for the attention towards future generations.

There are 68 centers awarded throughout Italy . In Sardinia, only Castelsardo and Elmas have been awarded the coveted award.

The evaluation criteria are based on 5 fundamental pillars : fight against illegal abandonments, sensitization of the territory, management of urban waste, virtuous activities of the institution and collaboration with the Plastic Free association.

The presentation of the 68 "Plastic Free 2023" municipalities was held in recent days in Rome, in the press room of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security which sponsored the initiative, in the presence, among others, of the Deputy Minister Vannia Gava.

The winning municipalities will take part in the official award ceremony , scheduled for 11 March in Bologna , inside the prestigious Palazzo Re Enzo.

In a period of great attention to the environment, the recognition of "Comune Plastic Free" is an idea of the homonymous association and has the aim of bringing institutions closer to environmental issues. Plastic Free is in fact a voluntary, non-profit association, committed since 2019 to combating plastic pollution, a real threat to the planet, humanity and all forms of life present.

The numbers that the association has managed to obtain to date speak of about 3 million kilos of plastic and waste removed from the environment , of over 110,000 students sensitized in more than 1,000 Italian schools , and of 130 sea turtles saved from certain death .

«Municipalities and administrators, together with the citizens, are the first protagonists of the awareness-raising activity on the correct recovery and reuse of waste which must accompany the path towards environmental sustainability and the promotion of the circular economy in our country - the words of the deputy minister at the 'Environment and Energy Security Vannia Gava at the press conference to present the award ceremony of the "Plastic Free 2023" Municipalities - I therefore thank each of the mayors involved in this challenge and the non-profit organization Plastic Free for the civic engagement promoted and stimulated on the field every day ».

In Castelsardo , the association, born in 2021 thanks to the initiative of the biologist Stefania Pinna , is now chaired by the surfer Renato Carta . In collaboration with the municipal administration, it has carried out numerous and interesting initiatives involving associations, citizens and schools.

«It is an award dedicated to the most virtuous municipalities that undertake to protect the environment for future generations - remarks the councilor for environmental policies Roberto Fiori - a recognition for the work carried out by our administration, which pushes us to work harder and better for the many projects in the field of respect for the environment that we have planned».

In recent years, the volunteers of the environmental association have talked about the problem of plastic on school desks and transformed the beach into a classroom to show children what is possible, each with their own small contribution.
