A journey spanning more than ten years, captured through the eyes of those who have spanned the century and guard the island's historical memory . Last night, in the premises on Via Dei Garofani, the Elmas Municipal Council for Seniors hosted the presentation of the project "The Long Journey Through the Eyes of Centenarians," conceived by photographer Pierino Vargiu and his wife Angela Mereu.
The meeting, moderated by journalist and photographer Alessandro Congia, offered a moving insight into longevity in Sardinia, enriched by the musical notes of Sergio Lecis's launeddas.
It all began in April 2014 with a first candid shot during a village festival. Since then, Vargiu, a resident of Elmas for over forty years, has transformed his passion into a true cultural and social mission, supported by the meticulous work of his wife Angela in collecting biographies . This activity is based on a deep bond of trust with the families, allowing the couple to enter the homes and lives of 606 centenarians throughout Sardinia, including 18 centenarian nuns. "Age passes, but the baggage of emotions remains" was the underlying theme of the evening.
The project, which now boasts a digital community of over 100,000 followers, is not limited to visual documentation . During the event, poems written by the elders themselves were shared: true hymns to love, resilience, and the fundamental value of community relationships. A precious cultural legacy that continues to endure through time, reminding all generations of the importance of cherishing their roots. Four centenarians were also present.
