Digging in newly resurfaced asphalt: residents on Via Mar Egeo in Quartu are furious.
New excavations after years of disruption. Abbanoa: "Connection to the new sewer system will allow the Sant'Andrea sewage treatment plant to be decommissioned."Per restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
We barely had time to breathe a sigh of relief for the newly paved road after years of inconvenience, when digging began again on Via Mar Egeo, along the Quartu coast. Abbanoa workers and vehicles, busy building the coastal sewer system, dug up the entire road, nullifying the resurfacing work done just a few weeks ago. "It's a disaster," explains local resident Stefano Scanu. "We knew Abbanoa had to do some work because they'd asked us for a right of way through our alley in 2023, but we didn't think they'd destroy the newly paved road like that. It seems like an absurd waste of public money ."
Abbanoa has announced that "we are connecting to the new sewer network, which will allow the Sant'Andrea treatment plant to be decommissioned. The same operation is underway for nine other old treatment plants, often on the seafront, which will finally be closed and converted into pumping stations, significantly benefiting the environment and local residents, who will no longer have to live with the inconveniences associated with the presence of these old plants." That said, "in consultation with the Municipality, all solutions will be found to rehabilitate all the roads currently affected by the excavation, including Via Mar Egeo."
The coastal project, costing €8.5 million, will be funded by EGAS, and has already been contracted out by the sole operator, but has been stalled for years due to litigation. A main sewer system and three pumping stations will be built on the main pipeline, and ten wastewater treatment plants serving individual coastal towns will be decommissioned. Ten secondary sewer lines, connecting to the main sewer system, will also be built, along with seven pumping stations on the secondary pressurized pipelines, and the wastewater treatment plants serving the Su Meriagu and Sant'Andrea developments will be decommissioned.
