Depopulation alarm from Alghero: «At least 31 countries could disappear by 2050»

On the island, at least 31 countries risk being erased from the map by 2050 .

Decline and depopulation were the topics at the center of the round table held in recent days in the conference room of the Quarter in Alghero , desired by the municipal administration and organized and promoted by the Pedagogical Coordination of the Municipality in collaboration with the Family Policies Office in the context of 'Alguer Family Festival.

Out of 377 municipalities in Sardinia , over two hundred have a population under 3 thousand inhabitants with a birth rate in which Sardinia boasts a sad record.

The mayors and administrators of various municipalities in northern Sardinia were present at the conference: Uri, Usini, Florinas, Olmedo, Sant'Antonio di Gallura, Borutta and Buddusò.

For the municipal administration of Alghero, the councilors Salaris, Cocco, Caria and Piras were present.

The work was opened by Doctor Paolo Bellotti who, together with Sergio Salis, illustrated the pedagogical project of the Municipality of Alghero, among the first in Sardinia to have started the process with the involvement of all the primary and nursery schools of the city. Among the interventions also that of Gianpiero Dalla Zuanna, full professor of Demography at the Department of Statistical Sciences of the University of Padua, who reeled off the data on the negative birth rate curve in Sardinia with the prospects for our island.

Those born in 2022 are half of thirty-year-olds, less than a third of sixty-year-olds and the same number of eighty-seven-year-olds.

The meeting moderated by the journalist Caterina Fiori also included the intervention of Paolo Masile, pediatrician and neonatologist, Silvano Arru, mayor of Borutta, Eugenia Mette, teacher who is part of the territorial pedagogical coordination, Barbara Letteri, pedagogist and psychologist, as well as Mimmo Lucà , president of the Cidis Consortium of Orbassano.

«We must necessarily reverse the trend by promoting family well-being policies, not just welfare, in which our Municipality has been investing since 2017 – declared the Councilor for Quality of Life Maria Grazia Salaris – Politics has serious responsibilities on the issue of birth rates, also because in the last twenty years there have always been few interventions by successive governments in favor of families".
