Region at work to overcome the blockage on the movement of sheep and cattle imposed by the Ministry of Health due to the deer disease outbreaks identified in Southern Sardinia.

Health councilor Mario Nieddu met today by videoconference with the trade associations of the livestock sector, with whom he took stock of the situation by answering the various questions from farmers.

The exponent of the Giunta explained that it is a virus that has been isolated for the first time on European territory and for which the decisions on the restrictions come directly from Rome.

First of all, it is necessary to understand if and how much the virus has circulated outside the areas of the outbreak, for this reason the Region has "made available to the National Reference Center of Teramo the frozen samples of the samples taken on captured animals and insects collected from since last year in Sardinia”.

Furthermore, it cannot be excluded that the disease has been circulating on the island for some time and that it has only been discovered now that the virus has been isolated: "In the event - highlights Nieddu - it is probable that the virus has already left the regional borders ". And if this were the case, the Region will ask, “as is the case with other diseases, that Sardinia be considered a homogeneous area with the territories that present the same epidemiological picture, which would allow movements towards those regions to be reopened ”.

If all the samples are negative, however, it would mean that the outbreaks remain limited to the areas already ascertained. If this were the case, the commissioner explains, “the Teramo reference center will have to provide us with the list of companies to be tested in a given radius of the outbreak. And if the checks were to confirm the presence of the virus only in the areas already identified, then it will be possible to reopen for movement in the unscathed territories , in the face of tests with negative results on animals".
