«The irrigation season will be able to start immediately and without further restrictions». The reassurance comes from the regional councilor for Agriculture, Gianfranco Satta, and from the president of the Northern Sardinia Reclamation Consortium, Tony Stangoni.
The promise was made to the mayors of the lower Coghinas valley, to the farmers' associations in the area and to the many operators who today took part in the summit convened in Valledoria to take stock of the serious irrigation situation.
The fields in this segment of the island have remained practically dry since March 25th due to a fault in the Casteldoria dam. A bulkhead malfunction was recorded in the system, resulting in a stop in the supply of water to dozens of agricultural companies. Enas, which will need at least two weeks to resolve the problem and which in the meantime will be forced to pour approximately 18-20 million cubic meters of water from the artificial basin, has installed three electric pumps that draw directly from the river bed Coghinas, according to a scheme agreed in the regional control room, for a flow rate of 500 liters per second to be dedicated solely to the irrigation of the lower valley district.
«A fourth pump will be installed which will guarantee the necessary supply», announced Satta and Stangoni. «It is useless now to search for those responsible for an inconvenience that will force us to waste so many water resources, but whoever is responsible will take care of planning adequate maintenance interventions from now on to prevent inconveniences and waste that Sardinia and the sector cannot afford can allow it", is the appeal of farmers and local administrators.
