Everything is ready to finally start the ambitious religious tourism project linked to the cult of the patron saint Santa Barbara.
The municipal council of Senorbì has confirmed its adhesion to the Foundation of the Mining Path of Santa Barbara with the aim of becoming part of the tourist itinerary dedicated to the saint. Itinerary that develops in Sardinia along the ancient mining paths that cross the places of worship and the churches dedicated to the patron saint of miners.
"The project schedule now provides for the definition of a series of initiatives that will allow us to develop new tourist opportunities through the enhancement of our cultural and historical heritage," said Mayor Alessandro Pireddu.
Santa Barbara is the patron saint of Senorbì: she is celebrated on 4 December, the date of her martyrdom. Much invoked by the military, she is also the patroness of the Navy, the National Fire Brigade, the Artillery and Engineering Corps.
She was born in 273 in Nicomedia (now İzmit, in Turkey), daughter of Dioscorus, a very cruel persecutor of Christians. Her father imprisoned her in a tower, jealous of her beauty. In this regard, it is said that, during a long absence of her father, the girl managed to escape from prison fortunately. Wandering in the woods, she then found refuge in a shepherd's hut but, betrayed, was handed over to the prefect Marciano. During the trial that began on December 2, 290, Barbara defended her beliefs and urged Dioscorus, the prefect and those present to repudiate the pagan religion to embrace the Christian faith. This cost her painful tortures. On 4 December she was beheaded with a sword by Dioscorus himself, who was however struck by lightning.
Built in the 16th century with a late-Gothic layout, the parish church of Senorbì was restored between the 17th and 18th centuries. The parish priest is Don Nicola Ruggeri.
