"I ask Sardinians to take to the streets with me, to make it clear that Sardinia is not willing to become Italy's prison." This is what Governor Alessandra Todde said in a video posted on social media, calling on the island to mobilize against the government's decision to send hundreds of inmates under the 41 bis regime to the Badu' and Carros, Uta, and Bancali prisons.
In his post, Todde recalled what happened at the State-Regions press conference on December 18th: "Undersecretary Del Mastro gave a briefing on 41 bis. And he said some very important things, putting the government's plan in writing. And he also said that, compared to the 192 places planned, at least 20% more will be added. So we're talking about 240 41 bis inmates, more than a third of Italy's entire 41 bis prison population, who will arrive in Sardinia."
"These gentlemen," the governor stated regarding the inmates in hard prison, "represent the boards of directors of the Mafia, the 'Ndrangheta, and the Camorra, and will certainly have an impact on our businesses, our economy, and our healthcare system."
Hence the call to take to the streets to say no to mass relocations: "We Sardinians," Todde concludes, "are an honest people, we are a people with upright backs and we want to choose our own destiny. We don't want our destiny to be imposed on us by others."
