There are just over a thousand migrants in Sardinia's reception system, according to the latest data from the Ministry of the Interior. Numbers that are far from those of the 2016-2017 period, when the 5,500 mark was broken. «And in addition to those of attendance, we must also pay attention to the data that the reduction entails from an economic point of view: at the time there were 1300 pay slips. Now a few dozen, if we get there.' The analysis is by Don Marco Lai, number one at Caritas in Cagliari, who is not afraid to tackle a topic that could back up the arguments of those who spoke of the immigration business: «But let's forget it», he says, « the point is that there are social workers, psychologists and other specialists who worked with good assistance. Not now".

And he really speaks of a good welcome «which now can no longer be guaranteed. There are still people who are convinced that every foreigner puts 35 euros in his pocket a day after landing. That money», Don Marco points out, if it were still needed, «were used to offer food, lodging and many other services. Now, after the decisions of the Salvini era, only 24 euros are disbursed. For this reason, many centers have closed: the costs are not sustainable".

So much so that now the reception activities supported by other institutions are functioning: «Of the approximately 1,200 migrants currently on the island, at least 300 are Ukrainians, then there are the Afghans, and a hundred children» , he underlines, «do the math, those arriving with the landings are one tenth of what they were five years ago. Only we, like Caritas of Cagliari, welcome 200 Ukrainians with a project carried out by the Church, which does not rely on the Ministry of the Interior". And it is based, instead, on donations and on the contribution of the Dioceses.
