The woman who ended up in the hospital after sipping water from a bottle ordered at a bar in the center of Carbonia is experiencing improved conditions. Tests on the substance that caused the lesions to her tongue and esophagus have not yet been completed, but the Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the possibility of negligent assault against unknown persons.
The fact
The alarm was raised on the evening of December 30th during a gathering of friends for a drink at a bar. The woman felt ill after sipping water poured into a glass from a bottle of sparkling water from a well-known brand (we are withholding the name pending definitive tests), which had arrived at her table along with other guests' orders. The owners of the establishment themselves called 118 immediately to take the customer to the hospital and then informed the Carabinieri of the incident: "The water was in a sealed bottle and was part of a recently purchased supply that we immediately isolated as soon as the incident occurred," owner Eleonora Chiaramonte said yesterday. "We handed over the bottle of water and the glass used by our customer so that they could carry out all the necessary tests, and then we also alerted the Carabinieri to report the incident."
The investigation
Carabinieri from the Carbonia station also responded to a report from the Local Health Authority (ASL), after the woman was treated in the emergency room and then in the Surgery department. Her condition is improving, although constant monitoring was necessary because the substance contained in the water was unknown—and still is unknown. Initial analysis results have not yet provided definitive answers, except for a higher pH than the carbonated water in the bottle should have had. A second laboratory will have to provide an answer to the type of substance that could have caused those injuries in such a short time. The bottle and glass have been seized by the Prosecutor's Office, and comparative analyses are expected to be carried out with water from the same batch purchased at the same time. The alleged crime against unknown persons is one of negligent injury. Meanwhile, yesterday the premises were also thoroughly inspected by the Local Health Authority (ASL), a necessary step after such a serious incident.
