Cagliari, when the walls speak: love, memories, politics
From the center to the outskirts, dozens of works that convey messages to the community and beautify degraded cornersPer restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
Decorum aside, there is definitely something romantic in the dedication on Via Argonne: “The most beautiful year of my life. Moments too beautiful to forget you,” writes the anonymous lover who also takes the opportunity to apologize for the many mistakes he has made. If the walls of the city had a voice, perhaps they would tell how that relationship on the rocks sixteen years ago ended. But they would certainly also say many other things, like who “Franco - who - lives” in Via Corte D'Appello was; they would talk about politics, football and a woman's fight against eating disorders. This is the Cagliari that can be read on facades and monuments, where the boundary between art and vandalism is thin, but the desire to communicate is evidently unstoppable.
Art - The walls of via San Saturnino speak, or rather, scream. So full of talent and colors that even those who are not fans of the genre certainly get a breath of vitality as they walk along the road closed to cars but not to graffiti artists. Undoubtedly also in good taste are the works created on the overpass in front of the old stadium, where in addition to the many writings dedicated to Gigi Riva there are those who confide in a large pillar a personal war: "I will defeat anorexia". A battle of MS, put down in black and white in 2023, which we hope has ended for the best.
Love and quotes - “I love you princess”, are overused in every neighborhood; less so the cultured quotes, which in the case of Castello take us back to Anton Chekhov: “Any idiot can overcome the crisis, it is everyday life that is hellish”, is the warning visible at the beginning of via La Marmora. In via Mazzini there is someone who has thought well to entrust to a large rock a piece of advice that - beyond the location - is certainly not debatable: “Do yourself a favor, read poetry”. And then there is a triumph of hearts and “6 la mia vita”, scattered everywhere by obvious sentimental writers and the ready-to-use spray can.
Bad mood and politics – The dedications to the police in the districts of San Michele and Sant'Elia are of a completely different tone. Where Digos and prison guards - according to the writings - are clearly not exactly popular. There is also room for political claims and independence, with the slogan "Sardinia is not Italy" repeated several times in the streets of Villanova, along with a clear dissent for military bases in Sardinia. And then there are those who fight luxury, because - they write - it is a provocation. It would also be a provocation to deface public and non-public buildings, but evidently this is not at the center of the thoughts of those who have decided to make their thoughts public.
Obituaries and struggles – You can also see the images of the dead, on the walls of Cagliari. More or less faithful representations of those who are no longer here but continue to live in memories. Like those who still make the sign of the cross in front of the giant mural that portrays William Corona among the buildings of Piazza Medaglia Miracolosa. An initiative of the friends of the sixteen-year-old who passed away in July 2018 with the signature of Manu Invisible. Elsewhere they mourn Nando: "We will miss you and you will forever run through our hearts", assures the obituary imprinted on a fence at the end of the old Sant'Elia village.
