A Roman-era aqueduct . Not just any one, but a structure "on which the entire network of the city was grafted". A building in the heart of ancient Cagliari, which experts define as " monumental in nature ".

The find is prominent and is destined to revolutionize the project for Line 3 of the light rail . The archaeological remains are located right at the terminus of the new route, outside the train station in Piazza Matteotti. The company that is carrying out the work has started excavations. And just over a meter deep he found the tanks and pipelines.

The archaeologists have already completed the first investigations, transmitted a few days ago to the Region and Arst. « These are important finds », says the superintendent Monica Stocchino, « under the ground there are monumental buildings from the Roman age. It is almost certainly an aqueduct .'

Now all the bodies concerned will have to meet to decide what to do: the intention of the superintendency is to "protect and enhance" the archaeological assets found and therefore a variant of the subway project will be necessary . The terminus will have to be moved. And not by a few meters: the whole area where the last stop was planned could hide new finds.
