The Regional Council has expressed a "positive opinion on the environmental compatibility of the project called "New Cagliari Stadium" , proposed by the Municipality of Cagliari".

The resolution, which constitutes a mere formal act of ratification of an environmental provision already adopted, is another step towards the creation of the new structure within the procedure for the issuance of the single regional provision on environmental matters (PAUR).

The new "Gigi Riva" stadium, to be built on the site of the old Sant'Elia stadium, which is due to be demolished, is expected to seat 30,000 people for international events. Cagliari has applied for a place among the cities hoping to host the 2032 European Championships in Italy.
