The Municipality's goal - announced in recent days - was to reopen the first stretch of Via Roma between today and tomorrow . Instead, there is still a bit of a wait. Cagliari has been waiting for almost two years (March 2023) to be able to use one of the city's main roads again, with the work that should have been completed in December 2023. Now the final step has arrived, which however leads to a slight delay in the timing: "The testing and reopening operations of the first stretch of Via Roma have begun and, barring bad weather, should likely be completed next week," the Municipality reports.
The stretch between Piazza Ingrao and Via dei Mille will reopen to traffic . That is, half of Via Roma, with the second one still undergoing work that should (barring complications) be completed in a few months. "The Municipality of Cagliari has paid particular attention to the road system of the Marina district," reads a note, "so that during the work on the second stretch, a balance between traffic and pedestrianization of the district is guaranteed." At the moment, no further details are known.
The signage of the new section of Via Roma will allow vehicles to enter and exit the neighborhood and the pedestrian connection with the new promenade that will be made accessible immediately. In detail, from Viale Regina Margherita you can turn onto Via Roma and from Via Roma continue onto Viale Diaz, or turn onto Via Pirastu . From Viale Bonaria, you can also access Via Roma, while the work on the second and final lot of the construction site continues. Once you arrive at Via dei Mille, it will be clear how you can proceed.
News also for Piazza Matteotti, the other large construction site in Cagliari that should be completed soon : the restoration of the historic shelter is underway. It is also the will of the municipal administration to make the square liveable through the inclusion of commercial activities under study that will be assigned with a specific tender.
