The controversy over the cycle path that will be built on Via Pergolesi by order of the Municipality of Cagliari continues.
This evening, around 7 pm, several residents and shopkeepers in the area, as well as several center-right city councilors, gathered to protest what they consider "a harmful project."
According to residents and business owners, "Via Pergolesi risks suffering the same fate as other streets where cycle paths have been built, such as Via Dante."
The center-right councilors who organized the rally said the appearance of no-parking signs to mark the start of construction "is serious and unacceptable . The project hasn't been discussed with those who live and work here; it's a top-down decision. Parking is already limited; with the bike lane, even more would disappear."
Road safety is a shared priority, the opposition emphasizes, "but a 30-mile zone could be implemented, which would reduce vehicle speeds and protect pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists."
Councilor Ferdinando Secchi added: "The bike lane on a busy street where buses also pass frequently will increase traffic and pollution."
For the Donne in Bici association, however, the lane is essential: "It ensures the safety of the most vulnerable: people with disabilities, scooter users, and bicycles," says president Kety Piras . "Ordinary streets attract more traffic (and are good for business) and allow emergency vehicles to pass more quickly and safely than on a congested road. Finally, there will be no more double-parked cars that block visibility, create danger, and paralyze the neighborhood."
Piras criticizes the opposition: "The PNRR was born in 2021, the center-right was governing in Cagliari, projects like the one involving Via Pergolesi were already underway then, it can be verified between the deliberations, so it's nothing new."
