Diego Deplano, a researcher at the University of Cagliari, has won the IEEE Control Systems Society's 2026 Best Young Author Paper Award, an award given to authors under 35 who have distinguished themselves through publications in the Society's leading international journals.

The award was presented in Parma, during the national assembly of the Italian Society of Teachers and Researchers in Automatic Control (Sidra), as part of the Automatica.it conference.

Deplano was among the three finalists, along with researchers from the University of Naples Federico II and the University of Bologna . The award honors the article "Robust Online Learning Over Networks," published in IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and developed in collaboration between the University of Cagliari and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Deplano co-authored the paper with Nicola Bastianello.

"The study," reads a University statement, "addresses the problem of distributed learning, a frontier of artificial intelligence that allows connected devices to collaborate on building a shared model without having to centralize data."

The research takes into account conditions typical of real-world systems, such as message loss, varying communication speeds, limited computing power, and data that changes over time. The work proposes new mathematical tools to ensure that learning remains effective even in the presence of these imperfections, opening up application prospects in areas such as sensor networks, collaborative robotics, energy systems, and healthcare.
