Pecorino Romano will be used to stuff McDonald's sandwiches. This will be the case thanks to an agreement between the Consortium for the Protection of PDO Cheese and the most famous fast food brand.
A meeting of two opposing worlds , that of pecorino romano which is produced mainly by shepherds and in dairies in Sardinia (the rest in Lazio and Tuscany), and that of the hamburger sandwich born in the United States.
The fruit of the agreement will be a sandwich, specifically called "Romano." According to the Consortium, the agreement represents an opportunity to promote and introduce pecorino to new consumers . "It's not simply a cheese: the territory comes before the product," says President Gianni Maoddi : "There's an entire supply chain that produces economic value, employment, local protection, and identity. It's this heritage that we must continue to recount and make recognizable, especially to the new generations. This is why we are firmly committed to this project."
According to director Riccardo Pastore, "The new generations use different languages and consumption methods: we believe it's right to reach out to them. If a young person encounters Pecorino Romano in a new way and that tasting sparks a curiosity to learn about its origins, its territory, and its history, we've achieved something important."
