In Cagliari the bastion of Santa Caterina is ready to "do a makeover" . The site, after years of abandonment, is preparing for a new life following the approval of the municipal council for the new arrangement project and the museum valorisation of the surrounding archaeological excavations. For mayor Paolo Truzzu this is an " ambitious intervention that marks an important step in the conservation of the city's historical heritage and making it accessible to citizens and tourists ". Thus «ancient Cagliari will be alive for future generations».

Various interventions are now scheduled on the calendar that will transform the face of the bastion. One of the most significant is the reconstitution of the "bastioncino" terrace level , which will be entirely repaved in flamed gray granite, in harmony with the surrounding environment, following the example of the Umberto I terrace. A large suspended attic will also be created on the archaeological excavations, without supports inside the ruins: the structure will allow visitors to explore the place safely.

Access to the excavations will be possible via two openings on the side wall of the Bastion, on the side of the Boyl Palace. The gap located at the top of the staircase will lead to a structure suspended above the excavation, from which you can admire the remains of the medieval buildings and the tombs. The second passage, located lower down, will allow access to the hypogeum through the original Roman staircase carved into the rock. This hypogeum, originally a large Punic cistern, has been renovated over the centuries, including the addition of two new lateral rooms and the annexation of a small cistern. The space took on a templar and religious role in Roman and medieval times. To preserve the opus signinum floors of the lower site, an elevated walkway will be built that will allow visitors to observe the delicate structures without damaging them. The Councilor for Public Works Gabriella Deidda is also enthusiastic, according to which «the synergy between the new architectural design and the conservation of our archaeological heritage is an example of excellence in the sector of urban redevelopment ».

The project, however, represents a variant compared to the one originally proposed, included in the 6 sub-projects for the overall recovery of the Bastion of Saint Remy. As the mayor explains «an increase in the original expenditure is expected, equal to 500,000 euros, necessary to cope with the increase in the costs of building materials, made more expensive by the post-Covid situation, and for the creation of new architectural solutions made necessary from the archaeological findings that emerged during the works".
