«We will guarantee all the necessary attention and relative access not only to residents but also to merchants for loading and unloading operations. Right now I'm thinking about when you do a renovation at home: you need a little patience during the work but at the end of the work, the result will be decidedly beautiful ».

These are the words of the mayor of Cagliari, Paolo Truzzu , during the presentation of the interventions planned to change the face of the city centre.

There are two main construction sites, in via Roma and in viale Trieste, with related changes to the road system, which will have the final effect of redeveloping the entire area, including Piazza Matteotti.

«We will begin - explained the mayor - with the closure of the portico side of via Roma by intervening on the road axis and then on the central promenade which will be completely recovered and completed with lots of greenery so that it can almost return to its origins. Then, from 5 May, we will move on to the redevelopment of Piazza Matteotti for an overall intervention that concerns the entire center, for around 16 million euros . There will be an impact on the viability but also on this front we will look for solutions because with about a million and a half that we have managed to recover, we will be able to reduce the costs of local transport season tickets by up to 90% , not only for Cagliari citizens but for all those who work in the city centre. We ask our fellow citizens for patience."

«It is in fact necessary – underlined the Councilor for Mobility Policies, Alessio Mereu – to open two construction sites simultaneously in as many central areas of Cagliari, to avoid losing European funding. But in this way, as well as being more usable and more beautiful, Cagliari will open up completely to the sea , shortening the distance and eliminating the obstacles between the port and the city».

To illustrate the main changes to road traffic, after the intervention of the President of the Council Commission for Mobility Policies, Marcello Piras, who underlined the opening of Cagliari towards the sea, was the Manager of the homonymous service, Daniel Olla.

" By the summer we hope to complete the works on the road network ", said Olla, also launching an appeal to motorists: "It will be necessary to use the alternative road network of the Cagliari urban core to avoid using the Via Roma, on the sea side. Better to focus on the Asse Mediano or on the Statale 554 to reach certain destinations without going through the city center ».

The construction sites to separate the flows between public and private transport in viale Bonaria were immediately underway with, in cascade, all the other interventions starting, in via Roma, in the segment between via Sassari and Largo Carlo Felice, with the establishment of a lane dedicated to public transport in the direction of viale Diaz.

These are the other main changes:

  • Obligation to turn right onto Viale Bonaria from Via Stazione Vecchia
  • Traffic coming from Viale Diaz, Via XX Settembre and Via Regina Margherita directed towards Via Pirastu
  • Obligation to turn left onto Largo Carlo Felice from Via Roma in front of the Town Hall
  • On Via Roma, in front of the arcades, transit is permitted only to authorized persons
  • Obligation to turn right onto Via Roma from Via Maddalena
  • Establishment of two-way traffic on Via Roma, in the section between Viale Trieste and Via Sassari
  • Reversal of the direction of travel on Via Sassari, in the stretch between Via Roma and Via Crispi, towards Piazza del Carmine
  • Reversal of the direction of travel on Via Maddalena, in the section between Viale Trieste and Via Roma, in the direction of Via Roma
  • Reversal of the direction of travel on Via Crispi, in the section between Via Sassari and Via Angioy, towards Via Angioy
  • Establishment of the one-way street on Via Pirastu, in the direction of Via Campidano

"To avoid traffic congestion - concludes Palazzo Bacaredda -, especially in the first period of operation of the new regulations and during construction site operations, it will be advisable, as far as possible, to choose alternative routes to the urban center".
