New construction site on the Cagliari port front. From January 27, access to unauthorized people and vehicles in the Sanità pier area will be prohibited: this is provided for by an order from the port authority in view of the start of work to demolish the old maritime station which will make way for an extra luxury hotel with a dock for maxi yachts.
"The area", the provision reads, "will be delimited with a mobile fence with blackout netting and New Jersey, by the construction company Ing. Raffaello Pellegrini Srl ", the same company that is working on the never-ending construction site on Via Roma, in other areas of the port, at the Ex fas of Elmas and that shortly - barring any unexpected developments - will have to proceed with the demolition and reconstruction of the San Benedetto market.
The construction site will be carried out on behalf of the Porto Rotondo Marina, through a project financing that foresees a private investment of 34 million euros.
The project is divided into three substantial parts: «The complete redevelopment and conversion of the former maritime station into a multipurpose center for recreational boating services and for the tourist use of the area; the revision of the landing system for yachts and private boats along the Calata Sant'Agostino and the arrangement of the public space between the new landings and the Via Roma landing».
The plan is for "the complete reconstruction of the old passenger terminal, which will be developed on three levels plus a basement used for technical rooms. In the new configuration, the ground floor of the structure will be dedicated to recreational boating services with reception, waiting room, staff and security offices, toilets, luggage storage, first aid clinics, but also commercial and catering activities with outdoor spaces facing the sea and an infinity pool. The upper floors, on the other hand, will house 36 rooms, a wellness area with gym and spa, a swimming pool and panoramic terraces". The entire building, in the new design variant, "will be surmounted by a canopy perforated in various points to recall the designs of traditional local carpets and, with particular architectural features, will be inspired by the shape of a sail supported by steel poles that recall the masts of boats".
Regarding the tourist port, the intervention foresees the use of the current layout also for mega yachts.
For all the surrounding public space, the project reconfirms the rationalization of green and pedestrian areas. In fact, the current driveway closest to Via Roma will be maintained, served by parking lots and separated from the remaining part by large green spaces, while a new double-lane cycle path of almost 400 meters will run parallel to the driveways, from the Calata Azuni roundabout to the Darsena, creating a new connection axis for alternative mobility with the existing cycle/pedestrian paths. The public pedestrian space will see alternating paths paved in stone, wood and green areas. At the base of the Molo Sanità, in a central position of the project, a square paved in limestone will be created, which will host a large rectangular fountain, with an infinity edge and the 3 sculptures by Pinuccio Sciola, which will be enhanced by special scenographic lighting.
