Viale Diaz . Despite it being August, the daily traffic jam of cars trying to reach Via Roma is insane . For over a year, in the stretch of road between Viale Cimitero and Via Stazione Vecchia in Cagliari , at certain times, people still drive in single file : cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles crowd into the permanently fenced-off congestion.
Construction work was supposed to be completed first last January, then at the beginning of the summer, and now (perhaps) in September. But even this deadline is uncertain.
At the end of the month, or at the latest by the first week of September , ARST (which manages the major contract) and the Municipality will meet to decide when workers will be allowed to enter Via Roma. On the one hand, the regional transport company is pushing to begin the final stage of the work immediately ; on the other, Palazzo Bacaredda wants reassurances about the timeframe before giving the green light to the new construction site.
"The ARST construction sites are now part of Cagliari's urban landscape," laments Giuseppe Farris , city councilor for Civica2024. "The Repubblica-Matteotti section, two and a half kilometers of track, should have been completed in less than 900 days. Today we're already almost 1,500 days into the project, and there's not even a hint of the final work in sight."
"If we consider that the light rail will have an hourly capacity of 1,200 seats," thunders Pierluigi Mannino , leader of the FdI group in the Council, "doubts arise about the quality of the transport study conducted to support the choice of the metro."
