The crisis is also affecting those who help. This is the case for the employees of the San Saturnino Foundation, the operational arm of the Diocesan Caritas of Cagliari, which provides assistance and solidarity to those in need and poverty.

They haven't received their salaries for months. And now many of them are reportedly struggling, with around a hundred employees in various roles. From workers at shelters for the homeless to those working in administration: "There have always been delays, but never like these past few months," says one employee. "We weren't given a specific reason; we were told to wait and be patient. Our last salary arrived in June. For many of us, the situation is difficult because we have rent or mortgages to pay."

The issue is also known to the unions. A week ago, the CGIL sent a request to the director of the Don Marco Lai Foundation, seeking answers on what it calls a "serious situation" that has been going on for some time.

In June and August, CGIL Fp Secretary Luisa Schirru expressed grave concern about the continuing delays and, above all, the lack of adequate and timely information for workers. "The situation remains essentially unchanged," she said in a statement, "with significant delays in wage payments and a persistent lack of reliable and timely information for staff."

A meeting between Caritas and the CGIL is scheduled for tomorrow at noon. Meanwhile, director Don Marco Lai explains: "We're very sorry for the delays, but we also ask for patience. We're a foundation and we have a lot of debts owed to public bodies that we still haven't received. There are delays in receiving payments, about a million euros. In any case, we'll be paying the August salaries this week."
