A World War II mine detected in the Gulf of Angels has been taken offshore and detonated.
The delicate operation was carried out this morning by the divers of the Underwater Operations Group (Gos) of the Navy's Divers and Raiders Command (Comsubin), seconded to the SDAI (Demining and Defense Against Insidious Vehicles) Unit in Cagliari.

The emergency intervention was ordered by the Prefecture of Cagliari after the accidental discovery of the dangerous device at a depth of approximately 38 metres, at the height of Capitana. It is a German GY type moored mine, dating back to the Second World War, with over 300 kg of explosives.
The operations of the SDAI Unit, directed by the second lieutenant Francesco Alò, took place in the presence of the Maritime Commander West Rear Admiral Enrico Pacioni and the Commander of Comsubin Rear Admiral Massimiliano Rossi.

The Mine was harnessed and towed to a safety area for the safety of people and for the marine ecosystem where it was detonated with a special explosive counter-charge.
