New life for Piazza Franco Oliverio , redevelopment of the pedestrian walkways over the San Bartolomeo Canal , and LED street lighting with colored lights for events and demonstrations. These are some of the major improvements planned for the Sant'Elia neighborhood, thanks to two new projects approved by the City Council as part of the "Redevelopment of Cagliari's Seafront" project.
The allocated funds amount to 8.8 million euros , all from the PN Metro Plus 21-27 program: 4.3 million for the first project, dedicated to the heart of the neighborhood, and 4.5 million for the second, aimed at improving pedestrian connections between the sports areas of Sant'Elia and Montemixi.
The first project involves the complete redesign of Piazza Franco Oliverio, with new pedestrian walkways, the creation of the churchyard of the Church of Sant'Elia, and the urban redevelopment between the Lazzaretto and the surrounding areas. Via Gavino Gabriel and the main road of Borgo Sant'Elia will also be improved, with the aim of improving the accessibility and livability of one of the city's most charming areas.
The second project aims to enhance the existing pedestrian walkways connecting the two banks of the San Bartolomeo Canal. Renovation works, architectural modernization, and new LED lighting, capable of changing colors for sporting or cultural events, are planned. The walkways will thus become not only a functional connection, but also an enhanced urban feature integrated into the landscape.
Both projects are part of a broader urban regeneration plan for the Sant'Elia neighborhood , launched in recent years with funds from PON Metro 14-20 and now continued thanks to PN Metro Plus 21-27 and the PNRR. The ultimate goal is to restore the relationship between this part of Cagliari and the rest of the city by redeveloping public spaces, infrastructure, and pedestrian walkways.
