In Cagliari 35 new automatic eco-islands to make waste disposal easier .

The new public service was presented in the town hall by the mayor Paolo Truzzu and the councilor for the environment Alessandro Guarracino .

The mayor explained that these are "modern infrastructures designed to complement the Municipality's door-to-door collection system (which remains the main collection system) and which aim to make the differentiation process more efficient, accessible and simple. for the citizens."

Already 10 of the 35 automatic eco-islands, which will be strategically positioned in different areas of the city during 2024, will be operational by this month of March , offering a practical solution for those who cannot fully join the door-to-door system.

«And thanks to advanced technologies – highlight the Municipality – these islands will allow automated separate collection, facilitating residents in the correct disposal of paper and cardboard, plastic, glass, tin and cans, and organic waste . During this first phase, however, the provision of undifferentiated waste is excluded. The introduction of this new and additional public service highlights the need to promote environmental sustainability, while offering flexible options for citizens."

Be careful, however, underlines Palazzo Bacaredda , «even if each of them will provide between 5 and 10 containers, the new automatic eco-islands are sized to be used occasionally and on an extraordinary basis, when it is not possible to respect the days and times established by the door-to-door collection calendar. Therefore, each of them will be assigned a predefined user group authorized for its access."

«Each user - explained councilor Guarracino - will therefore receive a communication with the indication of the specific eco-island of his reference, the only one where he can deliver the waste , which will be equipped with a user recognition system through the "ecocard", the same one used to access the other services offered by the municipal waste collection system, and an automatic limitation of access per calendar quarter (from 1 January to 31 March, from 1 April to 30 June, from 1 July to 30 September, from 1 October to 31 December). Access to the automatic eco-islands is however permitted every day, for all 24 hours."

Both Truzzu and Guarracino also underlined how «this initiative will be able to contribute to exceeding the 76% quota of separate waste collection , which has already rewarded Cagliari by placing it in second place among the most virtuous Italian capital cities».
