The latest act of vandalism occurred a few days ago: a group of minors smashed a window at the middle school on Via Trieste. Once inside, they emptied a fire extinguisher.
Vandalism continues in Cabras. This has been a problem at the institute for about two years. The municipality immediately filed a complaint against unknown persons.
The matter has also reached the Prefecture. Prefect Salvatore Angieri chaired a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety, dedicated to examining the measures to be adopted to ensure the safety of schools in the Municipality of Cabras, following recent incidents of vandalism.
The meeting was attended by the Police Commissioner, the Provincial Commanders of the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza, the Mayor of Cabras, the Municipal Councilor for Social Services, the Headmaster of the Cabras Comprehensive Institute, and the representative of the Provincial School Office, with a view to developing an integrated and shared approach to safety.
During the meeting, the need to implement passive defense systems was highlighted in order to prevent and counter further damage.
"Unfortunately, the vandalism continues," explains Mayor Andrea Abis. "Several students have also been interviewed by the Carabinieri, who are investigating the recent incidents. We've been working on school security for some time. For example, we've reinforced the fences and also floodlit the courtyard so it remains unrestricted even at night."
During the summit, the mayor of Cabras announced that, of a total funding of approximately €3 million, a significant portion will be allocated to the installation of burglar alarm systems and the comprehensive renovation of the school building on Via Trieste, with the aim of eliminating deterioration and improving safety.
"Our primary goal is to rehabilitate people, identify those responsible, and work to restore them to the values of the common good, civic duty, and legality," Abis added.
The school also actively contributes to the educational and social protection of the area: Headmaster Paolo Figus highlighted the school's commitment to keeping the building open in the afternoons, through courses and projects that directly involve students, strengthening the school's role as a place of gathering and prevention. At the end of the meeting, the Prefect thanked the police and the municipal administration for their renewed commitment to ensuring local safety and then emphasized how "thanks to an integrated approach, which combines the daily work of the police force with the use of the latest technology and targeted social prevention initiatives, based on dialogue, listening, and supporting young people and families, it is possible to make concrete steps towards greater safety."
